Watercolor Paintings!
Caroline and Seth have discovered the joy of watercolor painting. I (Laura) have been taking a class on Saturday mornings and the things I bring home have inspired the kids to try the new techniques I learned. Nothing is as encouraging as seeing something appear before your very eyes. It seems to have a magic all its own. Techniques and little hints are a bonus to make things easier and seem much more involved than they really are. Seth wanted to do a picture of a tiger. I had taught an art class a couple of summers ago and he was quite overwhelmed with the work we were doing then. His aspirations being high on perfection, I hesitated when he wanted to do a Bengal Tiger. We looked at images in the google search and found one with a good side view with beautiful background you could do with a wash. He traced it on the light table I have. Laying your paper on the printed photo and taping it to a bright window will do just as well if you can handle the arm fatigue that comes with holding up your arms while you trace it.
He traced the outline and the major stripes. I combined several smaller stripes to simplify the photo and still get the effect for a beautifully camouflaged tiger. He painted the wash in the background. laid in the color of orange for the base of the tiger, avoiding those parts he saw were white on the photo. Next, he went back over with the orange again on the darker parts where shadow would help on the tiger. We mixed a ultramraine blue and burnt unber til he had the black/charcoal he wanted and I left him alone. I did go back over and paint in the eye and shadow for him since they are crucial for looking real and we had not been thorough with tracing those. He is very encouraged with the outcome. H wants to hang it over his bed in the bedroom. Now to get to Hobby Lobby and get an acrylic frame/mat for him.
Caroline was quite bored during the super bowl and asked to get out the watercolors to try on her own. The day before after I got home from my class, we worked on some techniques together to create the landscape I had done my first day of class. She mad a tree with a background of the colors representing new Spring. After this lesson she knew how to do a "wash" how to "mix color" on the palette and how to apply detail with "dry brush". Know she felt like she wanted to do a free style of her own. I was happy to oblige. She is like me and appreciates "pure color" when it comes to her own independent pieces. I must learn how to do gouache so I can teach her. I don't have a photo of her independent piece, but the others are listed here with there titles.
For Carolines Landscape she was using a wash for the sky and background trees, then using dry brush on the tree, and finally her own version of detail with the grass and dirt. She loves sponging in the leaves. The sun was her own idea and she learned how to be patient when layering in her orange.

when there are paints around the house, there are painters.
I enjoy watching my kids decide to do and finish a project and be excited enough to
think about the next one.
